(b. 1996, Milan) Matilde Mosterts de Banfield is a London-based artist whose education is rooted in the History of Art of the Middle Ages. After eight years studying and working in the UK as an arts educator and artist’s assistant she currently works as a painter decorator at international level which reshaped her understanding of how painting, if extended into three-dimensional spaces, dialogues with curation.
Her practice explores how the role of the artist and that of the art historian are in dialogue. Painting thus becomes a translation of theories of time and medieval visuality to understand the positioning of a collective contemporary ‘period-eye’. From subjects which are drawn from her everyday life, Matilde constructs images that welcome the viewer to analyse how each element relates within the composition. She is interested in escaping the specificity of the role of the artist, to communicate the infinitesimal reception of temporal experience within the present.
